An attempt
to make Christian theology compatible with ancient Greek philosophy
by describing Christ's divine nature as the logos of God. |
The logos-theology
of early Apologists identified Christ with
the Greek term, logos, used for the notion of "Word" or "reason" in ancient
Greek thought. In his divine character Christ was held to be identical
with the logos of God. In his character as human, Christ was held to be
identical with the man Jesus. The relation of the divine and the human
would present a persistently difficult question for later theologians.
The early church would attempt to resolve these questions most definitively
in its ecumenical councils.
