English
translation of Anselm's method:
fides quarens intellectum

Faith, for Augustinian
theologians, is the work of grace in the willing believer. Understanding,
Augustinian theologians consistently maintained, is the reward of faith.
When it accepts revelation, faith seeks understanding. The sense of reason
and its proper function, on the other hand, varies considerably among
the theologians of this tradition. The primary mentor of this tradition
is Augustine of Hippo.
Its outstanding representative in the middle ages was Anselm
of Canterbury.
