Medieval orthodox sanctuary, Athens

Autonomous churches administer themselves and elect their own bishops. Such churches, defined more or less by territorial boundaries, are bound to other Orthodox churches by a common faith, a common liturgy, and common ecclesiastical law. In practice, autocephaly has been recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople.
