Thomism, the theological
tradition originating with Thomas
Aquinas, enjoys widespread acceptance in various forms in the Roman
Catholic Church up to the present. After a period of controversy over
his teachings, Thomas was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1567. In
the nineteenth century, Pope Leo XIII enjoined study of Thomas Aquinas
on all Roman Catholic students of theology. The hallmark of Thomism is
the complementary relation of reason and faith articulated by Thomas himself.
Thomas de Vio Cajetan (1469-1534) and John of St Thomas (1589-1644) are
representative theologians.
