Middle Ages

Northern capital of Charlemagne, fount of the Carolingian renaissance.

Signature of Charlemagne

From his court at Aachen, Charlemagne oversaw the reform of both church and state in the ninth century. With the assistance of the English deacon and monk, Alcuin of York, Charlemagne made Aachen a place of learning. Reforms emanating from Aachen unified the liturgy in the realm, contributed to making the use of the Apostles' Creed universal in the West, resulted in parochial and diocesan divisions of the church in the realm, created enduring features of cathedral life in the church, and raised the educational and moral standards of the clergy throughout the empire.
