Middle Ages

Island site of the monastery of St. Columba, base for missions to Europe, and center of Celtic Christianity.

Isle of Mull, Iona Abbey

In the sixth century the Irish abbot and missionary Columba established a monastery on this site. From here Columba oversaw the evangelization of the surrounding islands and the mainland. Iona remained a missionary center and exporter of Celtic Christian tradition in the centuries to follow.
