Situated on a remote
and imposing prominence, the monastery of Monte Cassino has been the chief
house of the Benedictine movement since its community was founded by Benedict
of Nursia in the sixth century. The buildings of the complex have
been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, most recently during and after
World War II. The present abbey was dedicated by Pope Paul VI in 1964.
