A place of considerable
ecclesiastical importance from the fifth century, Paris became the capital
of France in the late tenth century. A university was established there
at the end of the twelfth century. Thereafter it was the leading university
for theological study in continental Europe. Thomas
Aquinas was among its luminaries as were leaders of the later Middle
Ages.
