Tradition holds
this city to be the place of the burial of Saint James the Apostle. For
a time under Muslim control, the city was won back to Christian control
during the reconquest of Spain.
For this reason, the city became a symbol for Christian and Spanish resistance
to Muslim overlordship. Compostela was the most favored of the places
of pilgrimage during the middle
ages.
