Middle Ages Sack of Constantinople
Middle Ages

The seizing of Constantinople by Roman Catholic crusaders in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade.

Mosaic, Hagia Sohpia, Constantinople

Although originally setting out to conquer Egypt, the leaders of the Fourth Crusade turned their attention to Constantinople and sacked the city in 1204. There they proclaimed a Latin empire in the East which endured until 1261. This assault and capture of the seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople deepened the division between East and West in the middle ages.
