Desmond Tutu was
born in South Africa and was ordained a priest in 1960. He served as bishop
of Lesotho, and was the first Black to be the General Secretary of the
South African Council of Churches. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1984 for his work to end South African Apartheid
and to gain equality for all South Africans. In 1986 he was elected archbishop
of Cape Town. After the era of Apartheid had ended, he served as the head
of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which sought to confess the
wrongs of racial hatred and separation and to build peace wherever possible.
Tutu has directed his life's work toward "a democratic and just society
without racial divisions."
