Study in Latin America
|
For centuries Latin
America was solidly Catholic; but by the year 2000, an estimated 60 million
Latin Americans were evangelical Protestants. In sharp contrast to liberation
theology, evangelicalism in Latin America emphasizes the salvation
of souls, healing, spiritual gifts, and the second coming of Christ. The
fastest-growing kind of evangelicalism in Latin America is Pentecostalism.
This growth began with immigrant Protestantism
but has accelerated through evangelism by Latin Americans, mass media,
and mission societies from outside Latin America.
