John Knox embraced
the Reformation in the 1540s and championed the Protestant cause in
Scotland. During hostilities with the French, Knox was taken prisoner
and compelled to serve as a galley slave. After his release he came
to England and later went to Switzerland
where he encountered John Calvin. He later
spent some time in the German lands and finally returned to Scotland
in 1559. There he continued to preach an aggressive Calvinism and bent
his energies toward the establishment of the faith and discipline of
the Reformed tradition. After Knox's death in 1572, his cause ultimately
triumphed in the emergence of Scottish Presbyterianism.
