Era of Reform

Although Calvinism became the predominant form of Protestantism in the Low Countries, Roman Catholicism endured there as well. The solution was to partition Belgium and the Dutch Republic in 1581. Belgium became a Roman Catholic nation and Holland became Calvinist. Internal pluralism in Holland was tolerated by connivance, an arrangement by which the government tacitly agreed not to persecute minorities which practiced their religious life discreetly.
