Acts
declaring Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and succeeding English monarchs
the heads of the Church of England. |
During the reign
of Henry VIII legislation of
1554 declared the king "the only supreme head on earth of the Church
of England." This legislation was later repealed under Elizabeth
I. Early in her reign, another act of supremacy declared the monarch
"the only supreme governor of this realm, and of all her highness's
dominions and countries, as well as in all spiritual and ecclesiastical
things or causes as temporal." The principal effect of both acts was
to confirm the English rejection of the papacy and to secure the governance
of the church, including episcopal appointment, for royal control.
