Reformation Luther's Ninety-Five Theses
(1517)
Era of Reform

Arguments against the issuing of indulgences that provoked public debate of the program of Protestant reform.

In this document of 1520, Pope Leo X condemned Luther's writings

Following the issuance of the Disputation Against Scholastic Theology, a series of theses against the method and substance of medieval Roman Catholic scholasticism, Luther prepared another series of statements or theses against the granting of indulgences. This touched both popular and ecclesiastical interests and aroused a storm of controversy. The posting of these theses is traditionally regarded as the public beginning of the Protestant Reformation, although this might more accurately be attributed to the Disputation Against Scholastic Theology.
