Legend records that the Apostle Thomas the Twin (Didymus) brought Christianity to India c. 52. The earliest surviving text of the so-called Acts of Thomas is in Syrian and probably dates from sometime during the second through the fourth centuries. It seems fairly certain that Jewish Christian communities had been established along the subcontinental coast by the second century. Early forms of Christianity may have come from Syria. Some early communities combined elements of Hindu culture with Nestorian doctrine and ritual from Syria. At least six modern Christian communions claim descent from the Thomas Christians. |
