In 1417 the Council of Constance, after protracted negotiation, healed
the Great Schism
by deposing the rival popes of the day and electing Pope Martin V. The
council attempted to address the pressing need for reform, but was largely
ineffective in doing so. The council condemned over two hundred propositions
said to be associated with the teachings of John
Wycliffe and ordered the removal of his body from consecrated
burial ground. The council also condemned and prepared the way for the
execution of John
Huss as a heretic.
