The
first anabaptist confession of faith. |
The Schleitheim
Articles were probably drafted by Michael Sattler, a Swiss anabaptist.
The seven articles concern: baptism, the ban, the breaking of the bread,
the believer's separation from the world, the ministry and the congregation,
use of the sword, the taking of oaths. As a whole, the articles express
the primary beliefs of the Swiss and south German anabaptists. With
respect to the Protestant pluralism of the era, the articles express
anabaptist convictions in relation to the extreme spiritualism of one
wing of the radical reformation, on the one hand, and to the conservative
reformation, on the other hand. The Schleitheim Articles were
widely circulated, and both John Calvin and Huldrych
Zwingli published responses to these articles.
