Heresy concerning
the person of Christ, maintaining that Christ is of one substance
with the Father but not of one substance with humankind. |
This teaching was
urged by Eutyches (c. 378-454), a monk from Constantinople.
This doctrine was rejected particularly by Antiochene
theologians who argued that it did not sufficiently respect the humanity
of Christ and that it promoted Docetism. Eutycheanism
was rejected in the "Definition of Faith" adopted at the Council
of Chalcedon to settle the early Christological controversies.
